Interning at Gracia Work Center

I can safely say Barcelona is quite different than back home in Tucson, Arizona.  In Barcelona, I don’t have to worry about stepping in a cactus or the 37+ degree weather or hoping my ancient Saturn Coupe will make it to work without breaking down due to the heat.  Instead, on my way to work in Barcelona, I get to walk by fruterias and small boutiques, I get to take the metro to the beach and I can find restaurants with tapas hidden at every street corner.  To put it simply: working within the area of Gracia has been an absolute pleasure.
I have noticed that the work style here is very different then back home.  No one rushes to work and no one rushes to leave work.  Everyone lives enjoying every minute of every day.  I personally feel the work style here has positively affected my work because I am relaxed, not stressed and focused.  The laid back work style, I believe, leads to better work performance, especially within a coworking center.

Before I interned at Gracia Work Center, I had never really heard of a coworking center.  I researched a little to see if there were any in my hometown of Tucson, but there really weren’t that many that were well established.  On my first day of work at Gracia Work Center, I could feel the synergies right away.  Everyone was working on separate projects, however, everyone got along and it didn’t seem at all like an office from back home.  People in the coworking center could talk freely about their weekend, grab some coffee from the kitchen and then begin their work when they felt ready to begin.  The stress of being in an office I had perceived that I would feel was simply not there; only individuals passionate about their work and willing to work hard at it.

Realizing I have to return home in just a few weeks has been a hard reality to grasp.  I know I will miss all of the people and culture Barcelona brought into my life, but I know I will miss most the environment in which I got to intern for two months.  I not only learned a lot about marketing (which was the main reason I came), but more importantly about the people around me, their lives and that work doesn’t have to be a dreaded 8 hours of the day where you simply stare at a computer screen and count down the minutes until you are free to go “live” your life.  I know I will take this lesson back home with me.

Coworking is a very simple, yet revolutionary idea.  It’s no wonder why the concept has spread throughout the world and will continue to spread and evolve.  As an aspiring entrepreneur, I know I will work within a coworking center to gain valuable opinions about a future start-up and most importantly to make long-lasting friendships with the other coworkers around me.  I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to come to Gracia and can’t wait to see coworking centers appear at all different places in the world.
